We go by the etymological meaning of the word. The word “Patriot” originated in the 1590s (“compatriot”) from French patriote (15c.) and directly from Late Latin, patriota “fellow-countryman” (6c.). It means a “loyal lover and defender of one’s country and its interests.” This is what we’re referring to when we say “patriot”.

  • Propaganda… Another term that’s widely misunderstood. We’re aware of the negative connotation in modern parlance. However, whether propaganda is good or bad in fact depends on the merit or truth of the cause, and the correctness of the information published. We all create our own “propaganda,” in the purest sense of the word. Referring strictly to the etymology, the word is properly the ablative fem. gerundive of Latin “propagare,” which means to “set forward, extend, spread, increase.”
Hence, “any movement or organization to propagate some practice or ideology” (1790). The modern political sense (“dissemination of information intended to promote a political point of view”) dates from World War I, not originally pejorative and implying bias or deliberate misleading. And according to its 1929 definition, propaganda means “material or information propagated to advance a cause, etc.” As you can see, there’s nothing contentious about the word. If nothing else, consider that Orwell famously said “all art is propaganda.” Orwell was a pretty smart guy who knew a lot about this sort of thing.
